Welcome to Grades 4–5
We are pleased to give you a little glimpse into the life of our intermediate grades. Our teachers consider it a privilege to assist parents in the Christ-centered teaching and training of their children. It is a joy to observe students growing in personal responsibility, academic knowledge and Christ-likeness. Students are encouraged to treat one another according to Biblical standards and to consider one another as more important than themselves.
Our Godly teachers continue to build on the solid foundation laid in the primary grades. Abilities in all core areas are strengthened through lessons that are engaging, relevant and integrated with Biblical principles. Teachers and students have appreciated the interactive learning that is facilitated by use of many forms of technology including SMART Boards in the classroom. Parents are kept informed of instructional activities and grades through a variety of means including a password protected classroom website and electronic grading portal. In addition to being life-long learners, our teachers are also licensed by the state of Minnesota and certified by the Association of Christian Schools International.
Language Arts continues as a key element of the day as skillful teachers develop activities that assist students in reading for information, while still improving fluency, speed and comprehension. Writing skills are strengthened through a variety of activities including creative book reports, essays, research papers and creative writing. The addition of instruction in grammar and diagramming sentences strengthens both speaking and writing skills. Students continue to strengthen math skills and number sense through the regular instruction of mathematics. Bible and Scripture memory remain a core subject area with the goal of seeing students grow in their knowledge of the Word of God as well as their love for the Lord and obedience to His commands. Additional classes include, science, history, physical education, music, library, art and weekly Spanish classes.
Technology plays an increasing role at all grade levels. SMART Board technology has provided a tremendous resource for interactive instructional techniques in the 5th-6th grade classrooms. Teachers are able to integrate a variety of internet resources and technology into their daily instruction. Students and teachers also make use of our high-speed, networked computer lab that includes firewall safety features. Instruction is provided in keyboarding, word processing skills and responsible use of the internet for researching information.
Students remain with their primary classroom teacher for the balance of the day but will change classes for science and history, allowing teachers to specialize in one area for their grade level. Fourth grade students look forward to capping off their oceanography unit with a special field trip. Understanding and using math skills while enjoying a Minnesota Twins game has become a favorite field trip of 5th grade students. They also enjoy celebrating the end of the school year with a trip down the Minnesota River. Science field trips in 6th grade extend the classroom units and provide wonderful hands-on opportunities including a visit to Flying Cloud Airport and the opportunity to fly a small plane, as well as building and launching rockets.

All students participate in the Presidential Fitness Program where they strive to earn Presidential and National ratings and badges in such exercises as the mile run, sit-ups, V-sits, etc.
The Rollerblading unit is popular with all students in grades 3-8 and contributes to their fitness while being a fun exercise.
Our physical education teacher teaches by example and enjoys joining in with the students in all physical fitness exercises, game units, etc.
Chapel Hill Academy views technology as a tool to increase engagement by all students and to enhance the learning experience for both students and teachers. Our technology plan has integrated advanced equipment throughout our school and in our curriculum.
Discovering and appreciating God as the Great Creator forms the very core of the discipline-based fine arts program at Chapel Hill Academy.
Students receive instruction in the elements of art and an understanding of the principles of art through art making. Students will receive instruction in art appreciation, art education and art production that will enable them to understand art in an historical and contemporary context, to communicate with clarity and discernment regarding their own art work as well as that of others and to skillfully and intentionally produce quality artwork of a God-honoring nature.

God has given us the gift of music to glorify Him and give testimony of our faith in Him. By using this gift creatively, we are drawn to worship God, understand His truths and cause others to do the same. Students will receive instruction in music that will bring enjoyment, participation and instruction in communication without words. They learn appreciation of other cultures, historical periods and a variety of musical styles. Self discipline, discernment and tolerance both as listeners and performers is developed. Music helps create a sense of serenity and helps the children achieve success as they use their music to bring glory to God.

Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre, praise him with tambourine and dancing, praise him with the strings and flute, praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals. Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD.~ Psalm 150:3-6
These words from Psalm 150 echo the heart of our instrumental music program. Students are given the opportunity to learn a band instrument beginning in 4th grade. As students progress in their individual ability they are invited to join the Chapel Hill Academy band. Members grow in their ability to read music, listen to others and perform as a group.

Our sports program is offered to students in grades 4-8. Teams participate in the SSYO (Southside Youth Organization) and play teams from other area private schools. Sports include basketball for grades 4-8, volleyball for grades 5-8. soccer for grades 5-8, and baseball/softball for grades 5-8.
Because CHA believes in a well-rounded Christian education, teams participate in a devotional curriculum throughout the season. This curriculum focuses on building Christ-like character traits in the Christian athlete, so that their Christlikeness is evident on and off the field or court.
Before- and After-School Childcare
Chapel Hill Academy recognizes the busyness of today’s schedules. To assist parents in this regard, we offer “Cougar Care,” a flexible before- and after-school childcare program.
